RA Centre awards

PRESIDENT’S AWARD

This award recognizes significant contribution to RA.  Can be an individual or Group.  Nominees will have members for at least 5 years, with individuals having performed service for a minimum of 3 years and groups having made a single significant contribution to RA.

Doreen Phillips, a member of the Club from 1970 to 1993, was given this award in 1995.  During this time, she spent 12 years as the Daytime Badminton coordinator and caused this group to grow from humble beginnings to as many as 115 mostly female members.  The Daytime Program focused primarily on the fun and camaraderie of badminton.

Andrew Dabeka, a member since his junior days in 1992, was awarded this honour in 1999.  Ranked #1 in Men’s Singles in Canada for many years between 1999 and the present, Andrew started badminton as a beginner in his teens at the RA Junior Program and continues to improve his level of play.  He participated in the recent Bejing Olympics and will likely retire as a competitive player after the 2009 Worlds.  Still, Andrew works with Professional Mike Bitten to help grow the RA Junior Program and he participates in various adult functions, exhibition matches, clinics and social events.  He has a fierce determination to be the best he can be and follows a rigorous training program that requires many sacrifices, dedication and very hard work.  He’s a true homegrown talent, is a real club member and is liked much by everyone.

Russell Mullan, has been an active club member since 1992 and was awarded the President’s Award in 2005.  He has been a contributor to our Junior program ever since he joined.  He volunteered not only for coaching duties, but also to help out in Club events, such as the National Championships (particularly the Masters), Club Junior and Adult Championships and District events.  Russ is a very reliable person and very much liked by most adult and junior members.  But his main interest is in working with our Juniors!
