HALL of FAME – BUILDER
This award recognizes and honours achievements of individuals who,
through their efforts, have made a major contribution to the development of the
goals and objectives of the RA, over and above those of a normal
volunteer. Nominees will have been a
member for at least 15 years; and will have distinguished themselves as a
builder of the RA.
Dave Waddell, was an RA Badminton Club member since the late 1950’s and was inducted into the RA Builders Hall of Fame in 1992. He worked tirelessly with the Ontario Badminton Association and Ottawa District Badminton Association to rebuild the popularity of badminton. In the late 1960’s and 1970’s he was the major driver to ensure that the new RA East Wing would include the best badminton courts in Canada, still rated the best today, more than 30 years later. In 1972, Dave was named Sportsman of the Year at the RA Centre and in the City of Ottawa. He was an active member of the Club until his retirement from Agriculture Canada in 1979. Dave was a coach and an instructor of umpires and referees. He was a member of the Club Executive for several years in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s and also served as Leadership Director for the Ontario Badminton Association. The Dave Waddell Tournament (now the Dave Waddell Summer Open) was named in his honour. Although he retired to Hamilton, he always maintained an active interest in the Club until his death in 2008.
