In 1992, Ann was the winner of the Keith Holland Award, which is the premier recognition in Ontario for outstanding volunteer service and is awarded to the person who exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism and participation each year.

Ann was also competitive in her sport.  She was the 40+ Ladies Doubles Champion (1996) and she won 2 Silver Medals at the US Seniors and Masters Championships (1994).  She was appointed Assistant Coach and Manager of the Ontario Badminton Team for the Canada Winter Games (1995).

As a competitor, Ian represented the RA Badminton Club well for over 30 years, earning more than 10 Club Championships, more than 20 District titles, more than 25 Ontario championships, and so far (and he keeps going), more than 10 National Seniors & Masters titles.  For these achievements and numerous other volunteer activities, Ian also earned the 1992 RA President’s Award, was RA Badminton Athlete of the Year twice and Sportsman of the Year twice.  Ian also received the 1992 Associated Canadian Travelers (ACT) Sportsman of the Year and received a Province of Ontario Special Achievement Award in 1995.

Dave Waddell was an RA Badminton Club member since the late 1950’s and was inducted into the RA Builders Hall of Fame in 1992.  For over 60 years, Dave devoted his life to developing and improving badminton across Canada as a Club Executive, coach, official and competitor, and internationally as a scientific researcher.  In the late 1960’s and 1970’s he was the major driver to ensure that the new RA East Wing would include the best badminton courts in Canada, still rated the best today, more than 30 years later.  In 1972, Dave was named Sportsman of the Year at the RA Centre and in the City of Ottawa.  He was an active member of the Club until his retirement from Agriculture Canada in 1979.  He was a member of the Club Executive for several years in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s and also served as Leadership Director for the Ontario Badminton Association.  The Dave Waddell Tournament (now the Dave Waddell Summer Open) was named in his honour.  Although he retired to Hamilton, he always maintained an active interest in the Club until his death in 2008.

Wally Gerus, started with the Club in the West Gym for the 1959-60 season.  He was given this award in 2007, just 2 years after his Association Life Membership Award.  Many RA members will remember Wally when he ran the Pro Shop, which he started in 1978 when the new East Wing Badminton facility opened.  He supplied, supported, guided, sponsored and subsidized all racquet events, such as badminton, tennis, squash and racquetball and he was also involved with the curling and the gun clubs.  Wally has been a fixture on the Club Executive, serving in many different capacities.  He has helped in the development of many of our junior players by donating his time and in helping them find sponsors.  He also served on various committees that have brought prestigious National and International events to the RA Centre.
